Klis Croatia

Klis is a Croatian town centered around a mountain fortress of the same name. It lies in the Dalmatia region, just northeast of Solin and Split near the Klis mountain pass. The town has a population of 2,621, or 4,421 when including the eight other villages in its municipality (2001 census). The Klis mountain pass separates the Mosor and Kozjak mountains at an elevation of 360 m. Historically, it has had major strategic importance, since any inland force passing through Klis could easily reach the entire Split and Kaštela area. During the Ottoman wars in Europe, a pre-existing Roman fortress on a nearby hill was expanded into Klis Fortress. It became the center of a sanjak within the Province of Bosnia under Ottoman rule. Over the centuries, Klis was also ruled by the Kingdom of Bosnia, the Venetian Republic, and Austria-Hungary. Because of its geographic location, Klis is exposed to strong bora winds.
